There is an old adage in sales that goes – underpromise and overdeliver. Even though the intentions of this adage may seem to appear to be positive especially for sales people; it leaves a lot to be desired because at the bottom of it, this tells you to be economical with the truth. But it would be a good idea if we all tried to simply tell the truth, and you will be impressed at what you will learn.
What those who sell this concept want to tell you is that you really do not have to give all the information you have, because your recipient could get disappointed when they discover you may not deliver everything you may have promised them. You become afraid if people tell on you, no one will believe you again in the future and this will simply cost you many friendships and relationships. It may then seem that if you become economical with the truth, people will have fewer expectations on you and they will be pleased with your general performance in all you do together.
So what really is the problem of not telling the people you relate with all the things you need to tell them from the word go and just keep safe from responsibility? Why not just tell people half truth that will not tie you and just be happy with the whole process of being? Is it not just safe to say half truths because the whole truth could end up hurting those who are listening to you, because the truth could actually be bitter at times? So what are really supposed to do in the circumstances – just tell the truth – period!
You will actually discover that contrary to your fears, when people know that you tell the truth every time they will end up trusting you. Most people will want to relate with those whose words, they know that they can actually rely on. When people are not sure that you told them everything in a given situation, then they will not be sure you are not out to harm them in some way or another. Just tell the truth in all situations and when people know that you do, you will have real and genuine friends.
The concept of being economical with truth is an old idea that is not built on trust. Even though it may please the recipients at the beginning, when all things come to be, people will wish they knew everything at the first instance. So just tell the truth and you will be glad that you did.
