osCommerce is an online store software program that is written in PHP and uses MySQL database. It is free and available for the public to download and use. It is licensed by the GNU General Public License.
It is compatible with all web browsers including Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, etc. It supports English, German and Spanish. It allows you to list unlimited number of products and have unlimited categories. You can have one image per product. osCommerce is suitable for online ecommerce store that sells physical product as well as digital product. The administration panel is web based and can be accessed through the internet connection. You can also backup the database and restore it on another site. osCommerce offers temporary and permanent shopping carts. It ensures the information submitted by your customers are safe and secured through Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) support. Shipping costs can be calculate based on the zone type. You can also include the tax amount for each product which will be displayed on the product page.
If you want to install OS Commerce through cPanel, follow the instructions below:
Procedure:
- On the homepage of your cPanel, click on the Fantastico icon. This will take you to the home page of Fantastico.
- Click on OS Commerce in the E-commerce section on the left Navigation bar.
- Click on New Installation.
- Select the domain on which you want to install OS Commerce from the Install on domain drop down menu.
- If you want to install OS Commerce in the root directory of the domain, leave the Install in directory text box empty. If you want to install OS Commerce in a directory, enter the directory name. This directory should not be existed. It will be automatically created.
- Enter a username in the Administrator-username text box. You need this to enter the OS Commerce administration area.
- Enter a password in the Password text box. You need this to enter the OS Commerce administration area.
- Enter a name for your online shop in the Site name text box.
- Enter your name in the Owner’s name text box.
- Enter a name that will appear in the FROM field in the emails sent by the shop.
- Enter your email address in the Your email address text box. A copy of all orders will be sent to this address.
- If you want to use SSL, choose Yes in the Use SSL drop down menu. If not, choose No in the Use SSL drop down menu.
- In case you use SSL, enter the secure server hostname.
- If you want your product listing to show prices including tax, choose Yes from the Show prices incl. tax drop down menu. If not, choose No from the Show prices incl. tax drop down menu.
- In the drop down menus below, specify whether you require your client to fill in their birth date, gender, company name, suburb, and state.
- When you are done, click the Install OS Commerce button.
- Click the Finish Installation button.
- OS Commerce is now successfully installed.
If you follow the steps mentioned above, you will be able to install osCommerce on your website through Fantastico in Cpanel.
