How to Avoid Sleep Deprivation

Sleep deprivation is a very serious condition that may cause extreme problems with your health, mood, and social life.  Sleep deprivation will not allow you to think clearly or function normally, so in order to be productive you must get a good night sleep!  There are very simple steps that you may not think of, that will help you sleep at night and all night.

Many things may stimulate your body or your brain before you go to bed, so you want to make sure you avoid all of them in order to fall asleep quickly.  First, you want to avoid caffeine, nicotine, sugary foods, or junk foods for about an hour before you go to bed.

Also, an hour before you go to bed, avoid exercising.  Exercising gets your blood pumping and stimulates you body and the brain.  Exercising provides you with more energy, so do not do it before you want to sleep.  It is recommended that you exercise in the morning before you begin all your proper tasks for the day.

Stimulating the mind can also cause you not to fall asleep.  Avoid stressful activities or fights before going to bed.  Avoid conflicts, thinking about money problems, or anything stressful.  If you are fighting, ask the other person to call it truce for the time being, and the situation can be solved in the morning.  If you are worried or stressed about something, continue to tell yourself that there is nothing you can do about it if you do not sleep.  Just relax and sleep.

Conflicts with sleep count.  Do not fight with yourself to go to sleep, do not stress or worry about it.  That will only cause more problems by not allowing you to fall asleep.  Anxiety is a horrible emotion that causes many people to lose much sleep.

If you feel that these are not your issues, and that you do not feel like you have enough time in your day to sleep because there is just too much that needs to be done, join the crowd.  But sleep Is a MUST.  We must sleep or we will not be able to ‘get anything done.’  With a lack of sleep you cannot think clearly to solve problems, understand what is going on, or stay awake when you need to be working.  If you find yourself nodding off and getting frustrated easily, you are to the point where going to sleep will benefit what needs to be done.  Not only will getting sleep benefit you, but it will allow you to improve the quality of the work as well.

Still do not feel like you can give it a rest?  Start managing your time better.  Use time management skills and start planning your week assignments in advance.  Plan when you can work, and what you will work on, and for how long.  Write it down on a calendar so you will stick to it more.  Also, in this case it may even benefit you to write down what time you want to wake up and fall asleep each day.  This will help you understand how to fit everything into your schedule and find the best ways to manage your time.
