Yeast infections are a very common infection caused by an excessive over growth of Candida albicans. Candida albicans are naturally present in the human body. When Candida proliferates, the symptoms are visually apparent. The symptoms include a smelly discharge. The texture is thick, white and cottage cheese like. There is redness, irritation, burning and itching of the area infected. Here are some natural ways to treat a yeast infection, without the use of antibiotics. Some people prefer natural remedies to antibiotics because antibiotics do not differentiate between “good bacteria” and the ones causing the infection. Antibiotics may cause a further disruption in the normal flora.
Step 1
Have some yogurt. Yogurt naturally contains acidophilus and bifidus. These bacteria help alleviate yeast growth. Plain yogurt should be used if you plan to use it as a vaginal douche or as a topical agent to soothe the outside of the genital area. If you want to make a douche simply fill a tampon applicator with the plain yogurt that contains live cultures directly into the vagina.
Step 2
Take a supplement. You can find a lactobacillus/acidophilus supplement over the counter at any drugstore or pharmacy. Follow the directions on the label.
Step 3
Reduce all sugar from your diet until your symptoms are gone. Yeast thrives on sugar. It helps it remain vital and strong. Cutting back improves the healing process.
Step 4
Try an herbal douche. Dilute 1-3 TBSP of vinegar in 1 quart of water. You may douche with this every day but not longer than 7 days.
Step 5
If you’re still having symptoms after 7 days there are other herbal douche remedies that can help restore your normal flora. Combine equal parts of Raspberry, Comfrey, and Sage with ¼ part Goldenseal. Herbs like Goldenseal are known to have antibiotic like properties. Raspberry has a long history in terms of female reproductive wellness. These herbs can also be combined with vinegar.
Step 6
Try using a garlic suppository into the vagina. Garlic is a pungent anti-fungal agent. Peel 1 clove and wrap the clove of garlic in a piece of sterile gauze. You can get sterile gauze at any drug store or pharmacy. Tie a string around the end of the gauze to secure the garlic and also make it easy for removal. Insert the garlic into the vagina with the index finger as high up as you can.
Step 7
There is an herb called Gentian Violet that is very traditional in its use. It has been used to treat and cure many infections, including yeast infections. You can find Gentian Violet at any pharmacy. Apply it to the affected area twice a day. Use a pad to protect clothing and undergarments. Gentian Violet is known to also permanently stain.
